Dystopia in Science Fiction - What Blade Runner 2049 Warns of us AI
One of the most interesting concepts to me is dystopian futures. I absolutely love the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and the film Blade Runner 2049 and can so vividly remember seeing it for the first time.
The film portrays a dystopia where artificial intelligence blurs the lines between human and machine. In this world technology, corporate greed, and social stratification intersect to perpetuate oppression and exploitation. It reflects and critiques contemporary power structures and explores the complexities of identity, agency and technological advancement in a culture defined by economic inequalities.
The movie focuses on the danger of technological advancements and its relation to social inequality. It highlights themes of existentialism, morality, and the consequences of playing god by creating beings with emotions and autonomy.
It warns against unchecked technological advancement, questioning the ethical implications of manipulating life and consciousness and serves as a cautionary tale about the potential repercussions of humanity's pursuit of technological progress. In the film the disparity in access to technology reinforces existing social hierarchies, with those at the bottom unable to compete with or access the resources necessary for upward mobility. This technological inequality deepens social divisions and perpetuates a cycle of oppression, echoing real-world concerns about the unequal distribution of technological advancements and its impact on society.
